Profound Promises #7

Published on Feb 8, 2010 - In: Devotional

Boldly claiming the ancient-fresh promises shared with us in the Scriptures can suddenly reveal a small glimpse of the infinitely large tapestry God is weaving with our lives. Our perspectives, in the process, may be completely flipped upside down, and our lives may start to make a little more sense.

Some of us (me!.. and maybe you too, sometimes?) have a really difficult time grasping what renewed life with God fully means. We genuinely pray our first prayer to step into salvation, and yet we still fall short. Constantly.

It’s just the consequence of what we’re born into: a fallen world. Our nature as humans is purely sinful.

Yes, we can do random acts of kindness and even run fully developed organizations to help find a cure for cancer, but unless we act purely for the glory of God, it isn’t good, it’s self-serving.

The following verse promises that when we start this new journey in Jesus we no longer have a sin nature. Accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior allows us to live in brand new nature we’ve never known before. We put on a divine nature, purely by God’s grace, so that we can fight off our sinful desires for the glory of God.

May you give glory to him for releasing you from yourself.

2 Peter 1:3-4

Today’s New International Version

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

New Living Translation

By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

The Message

Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the One who invited us to God. The best invitation we ever received! We were also given absolutely terrific promises to pass on to you—your tickets to participation in the life of God after you turned your back on a world corrupted by lust.

This post is to serve as a tutorial in guiding you to a less intrusive Facebook experience (i.e. basically a completely custom aesthetic renewal of the site). I would suggest reading through the entirety of this post before acting or installing anything. Depending on your technical skill level I may or may not be able to provide support to you for this. Do not read any further if you are not willing to do a little self-learning. Also, this method won’t last forever (because Facebook’s code and infrastructure change often, as we all know), but it’s what is available for now. And it works wonderfully.

I feel like I carefully explain each step in the process, however you don’t have to read it all if you’re feeling like a know it all (but like I said, I may not feel inclined to give you support if you run into trouble without reading everything available to you here). Just read the bold lines for the key points if you want. I would however highly suggest you read all the regular text as well so you understand what you’re doing.

Part one: Choosing the right web browser (Firefox)

If you aren’t sure what a web browser is, read here.

You must have Firefox to go on. Sorry. Let go of IE or Safari now. They are dying web browsers anyways.

1) Download the latest version of Firefox here.

A note to those who don’t use Firefox: When installing Firefox you have the option of importing your bookmarks/favorites from other web browsers such as Internet Explorer. Do that if it’s important to you.

And a note for those who already use Firefox: If you have Firefox installed, you probably already have the latest version as it notifies you of updates automatically. You can check at any time by click Help from the Firefox menu and choosing “Check for Updates…”

Part two: Installing the add-ons we need for Firefox

Add-ons are what make Firefox the most superior web browser on the Internet. They allow you to completely customize your experience on the web, and you’ll soon see how. We’re going to be installing two add-ons.

Adblock Plus is the first add-on we’ll install. It’s not specifically for Facebook; it will block ads on all sites across the web. It’s amazing.

1)Install Adblock Plus from here.

After the installation Firefox will ask if it can restart itself. Do it! When Firefox relaunches, a web page will automatically be loaded in Firefox asking you to choose a “filter subscription.” Choose EasyList (USA) since we live in the USA. Click Okay, Save, or whatever the finalizing button says near the bottom.

The second and last add-on we will install is called Greasemonkey. It will allow us to install something into our web browser called a “script” which is in basic words a bit of computer language that will let us customize our personal Facebook experience.

2)Install Greasemonkey from here.

Part three: Installing the Facebook Fixer Greasemonkey script

Now we’ll install the script I previously mentioned. It’s called Facebook Fixer and it does just that. It makes Facebook not as annoying by allowing us to block out the things we don’t want to see.

1) Install Facebook Fixer from here.

Once it’s installed, close any windows of Facebook which you may have previously had opened.

Open a fresh Facebook page. You will then need to mouse over Settings on the top of the Facebook page (yes, this script is implemented right into the Facebook layout, making it super simple to use) and then click Facebook Fixer from that menu.

Now all you have to do is decide how exactly you want your Facebook to be. Take the time to browse through all the options to customize everything to your liking. It’s pretty self explanatory from there! Hit the refresh button on the Facebook Fixer window when you’re done picking options. It will reload a new and improved Facebook experience.
